Arvind Krishna is an Indian-American engineer and business executive who has been CEO of IBM since April 2020 and chairman since January 2021. An IIT Kanpur graduate, he spent his career in IBM Research before leading the Red Hat deal and refocusing IBM on hybrid cloud and AI.
Biography
Background
Krishna grew up partly in Coonoor and Dehradun; his father was an Indian Army officer. He studied electrical engineering at IIT Kanpur and earned a PhD at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in 1990.
IBM Research
He joined IBM’s Thomas J. Watson Research Center in 1990, working on networking, security and databases, and later led IBM Research and its cloud and cognitive software division.
Red Hat
He was a key architect of IBM’s $34 billion purchase of Red Hat in 2019, the basis of its hybrid-cloud strategy.
CEO
As CEO from 2020 he spun off the infrastructure services business as Kyndryl in 2021 and launched watsonx AI products, while investing in quantum computing.
