Anthony Tan is a Malaysian-born Singaporean businessman who co-founded Grab with Tan Hooi Ling in 2012 as a taxi-booking app in Kuala Lumpur. Grab became Southeast Asia’s leading super-app for rides, food delivery and payments and bought Uber’s regional business in 2018.
Biography
Background
Tan comes from a family that runs Tan Chong Motor, a major car distributor in Malaysia. He studied economics at the University of Chicago and earned an MBA at Harvard.
MyTeksi
At Harvard he and Tan Hooi Ling wrote a business plan for a safer taxi app, which won second place in a competition. They launched MyTeksi in Malaysia in 2012.
Grab
Renamed Grab, it expanded across eight countries, adding food, deliveries and GrabPay. In 2018 it bought Uber’s Southeast Asian business.
Public company
Grab listed on the Nasdaq in 2021 through a SPAC deal.
