Biography
Background
Wojcicki grew up on the Stanford campus; her sister Susan later led YouTube. She studied biology at Yale and worked as a healthcare investment analyst for ten years.
23andMe
In 2006 she co-founded 23andMe with Linda Avey and Paul Cusenza. Customers spit into a tube to learn about their ancestry and genetic health risks; the name refers to the 23 pairs of human chromosomes.
Regulators and research
In 2013 the US Food and Drug Administration ordered it to stop health reports until they were approved, which happened in stages from 2015. Its database of millions of consenting customers was used for medical research and drug discovery.
Bankruptcy
After falling revenues and a 2023 data breach, 23andMe filed for bankruptcy in March 2025 and Wojcicki resigned as CEO. In July 2025 the TTAM Research Institute, a non-profit she leads, bought the company.
