Anders Hejlsberg is a Danish software engineer who wrote Turbo Pascal, created the Delphi environment at Borland and, at Microsoft, became lead architect of C# and the creator of TypeScript — languages used by millions of developers.
Biography
Turbo Pascal
Hejlsberg studied electrical engineering at the Technical University of Denmark. He wrote a Pascal compiler for small computers, which Borland licensed and sold as Turbo Pascal in 1983. Fast and cheap, it became hugely popular.
Delphi
As Borland’s chief architect he led Delphi (1995), a visual development environment for Windows built on Object Pascal.
C# and .NET
Microsoft hired him in 1996. He worked on J++ and then led the design of C#, released in 2000 as part of the .NET platform. C# became one of the most popular languages, used for business software and Unity games.
TypeScript
In 2012 he released TypeScript, which adds static types to JavaScript. It became one of the most-used languages on GitHub. In 2025 his team began porting the TypeScript compiler to Go for speed.
