Alexandr Wang is an American entrepreneur who dropped out of MIT to found Scale AI, which supplies labelled data for training AI systems. In 2021 he became the world’s youngest self-made billionaire. In 2025 Meta invested about $14 billion in Scale and hired him as chief AI officer to lead Meta Superintelligence Labs.
Biography
Background
Wang grew up in Los Alamos, where his Chinese immigrant parents were physicists at the national laboratory. He competed in maths and programming contests and worked at Quora as a teenager.
Scale AI
After a year at MIT, he co-founded Scale AI in 2016 through Y Combinator with Lucy Guo. It provides human-labelled data for self-driving cars, the military and large language models.
Billionaire
Scale’s rising value made Wang, at 24, the youngest self-made billionaire in 2021.
Meta
In June 2025 Meta bought 49 per cent of Scale for about $14 billion, and Wang left to become Meta’s chief AI officer, leading its superintelligence effort.
