Adi Godrej is an industrialist who led the Godrej Group, one of India’s oldest business houses, for several decades, expanding its consumer goods, real estate and agricultural businesses in India and abroad. He received the Padma Bhushan in 2013.
Biography
Growing the group
He modernised the group’s soap and consumer goods business, which became Godrej Consumer Products, and expanded into real estate, agricultural products and international markets through acquisitions in Asia, Africa and Latin America.
Philanthropy
Much of the group’s ownership is held by trusts that fund conservation, health and education, including the protection of mangroves in Mumbai.
The Godrej family
The Godrej Group was founded in 1897 by Ardeshir Godrej, who began by making locks. Adi Godrej, a grandson of the family, studied at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and joined the family business in the early 1960s.
Later years
He handed over day-to-day leadership to the next generation, and in 2024 the family reorganised its businesses into two groups. He received the Padma Bhushan in 2013.
