Biography

Child star

Sridevi began acting at the age of four in the Tamil film Thunaivan (1969) and worked steadily as a child artist. As a teenager she starred in K. Balachander’s Moondru Mudichu and Bharathiraja’s 16 Vayathinile (1977), becoming a leading actress in Tamil and Telugu cinema.

Hindi superstar

Her Hindi breakthrough came with Himmatwala (1983), and the same year she played a woman with amnesia in Sadma, a remake of her Tamil hit Moondram Pirai. In the late 1980s and early 1990s she headlined hits such as Mr. India (1987), Nagina, ChaalBaaz, Chandni (1989) and Lamhe (1991), often carrying films on her own.

Comeback

After a break of fifteen years to raise her family, she returned in English Vinglish (2012), playing a housewife who learns English, to great acclaim. Her final leading role, as a mother seeking justice in Mom (2017), won her a posthumous National Film Award for Best Actress.

Death and legacy

Sridevi died on 24 February 2018 in Dubai, where she had travelled for a family wedding; authorities ruled her death an accidental drowning. She received the Padma Shri in 2013. She was married to producer Boney Kapoor; their daughters Janhvi and Khushi Kapoor are actresses.
