Sonu Nigam is a playback singer who became one of the leading voices of Hindi film music from the late 1990s. Known for songs such as “Sandese Aate Hai” and “Kal Ho Naa Ho”, he has recorded in many Indian languages and received the Padma Shri in 2022.
Biography
Early life
Sonu Nigam began singing on stage with his father, singer Agam Kumar Nigam, at the age of four, performing Mohammed Rafi songs at weddings and parties in Delhi. At eighteen he moved to Mumbai with his father to look for work in films.
Breakthrough
He gained national attention as host of the television music show Sa Re Ga Ma from 1995 and with the song “Achcha Sila Diya Tune Mere Pyar Ka” from the album Bewafa Sanam. The patriotic “Sandese Aate Hai” from Border (1997) made him a leading film singer, and his album Deewana (1999) was a major pop hit.
Hit after hit
In the 2000s he recorded a long series of popular songs, including “Suraj Hua Maddham”, “Kal Ho Naa Ho” — which won him the National Film Award and a Filmfare Award — “Main Agar Kahoon” and “Abhi Mujh Mein Kahin” from Agneepath (2012). He has also acted in films and been a judge on singing reality shows.
Honours
Sonu Nigam received the Padma Shri in 2022. He has sung in Hindi, Kannada, Bengali, Odia, Tamil, Telugu and other languages and is admired for his ability to sing across styles, from soft ballads to classical-based songs.
