Sanjeev Kapoor is India’s best-known celebrity chef. His television show Khana Khazana ran for nearly two decades and made home cooking a popular broadcast genre, and he has written more than 150 cookbooks.
Biography
Early career
Sanjeev Kapoor completed a diploma at the Institute of Hotel Management in Pusa, New Delhi, and began working in hotel kitchens in 1984, including stints in India and New Zealand. In 1992 he became the youngest executive chef at the Centaur Hotel in Mumbai.
Khana Khazana
In 1993 he launched Khana Khazana on Zee TV. Presenting recipes in a warm, accessible style for home cooks, it became one of the longest-running cookery shows in Asia, broadcast in many countries, and won several Indian Television Academy awards for best cookery show. In 2011 he founded FoodFood, an Indian television channel devoted to food.
Business
With his wife Alyona Kapoor he runs Turmeric Vision, which manages his media and restaurant businesses, including The Yellow Chilli restaurants, and he co-founded the kitchenware brand Wonderchef. He has written more than 150 cookbooks, including Khana Khazana: Celebration of Indian Cookery and How to Cook Indian, and serves on Singapore Airlines’ international culinary panel.
Recognition
He received the Padma Shri in 2017 and the Indian government’s Best Chef of India award. In 2017 he set a Guinness World Record by cooking 918 kg of khichdi live at World Food India in New Delhi. He has judged MasterChef India and appeared in Forbes India’s celebrity list.
Influence on Indian food culture
Kapoor is often credited with making cooking a respectable and aspirational career in India and with bringing chef culture into Indian homes through television. His simple, measured recipes encouraged millions of home cooks — many of them men cooking for the first time — and his restaurant and packaged-food businesses carried Indian flavours to international markets in the Middle East, Asia and North America.
