Why Shah Rukh Khan is the world’s most-loved Indian star

Every year on his birthday, 2 November, thousands of fans gather outside Mannat, Shah Rukh Khan’s home in Mumbai, waiting for him to appear on the balcony and wave. Similar scenes have played out in cities around the world. Few actors anywhere inspire such devotion. Why?

The diaspora star

Khan’s rise in the 1990s coincided with satellite television and the growth of Indian communities abroad. Films such as Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge and Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham were set partly in Britain and showed Indian families abroad holding on to their traditions. For millions of overseas Indians, Khan became a link to home.

His films became major successes in the United Kingdom, the United States, the Gulf and beyond, and he became the star most associated with Bollywood internationally.

Beyond Indian audiences

Khan’s fan base reaches far beyond Indians. He has a strong following in Germany, where his films were dubbed and shown on television; in parts of Africa and the Middle East; and in South-East Asia. My Name Is Khan (2010), about a Muslim man with Asperger’s syndrome in post-9/11 America, played at the Berlin Film Festival and drew wide international attention.

As co-owner of Red Chillies Entertainment and the IPL team Kolkata Knight Riders — and of related teams in other T20 leagues — he has built a business empire unusual for an actor. In 2024 the Hurun list estimated him to be a billionaire, largely because of these ventures.

The 2023 resurgence

Pathaan and Jawan in 2023 reminded everyone of his box-office pull. Both were released widely abroad and became among the most successful Indian films ever in overseas markets. In 2025 he became the first Indian male actor to attend the Met Gala in New York, wearing a Sabyasachi outfit.

Generosity and causes

Through the Meer Foundation, named after his father, Khan supports acid-attack survivors and other causes. He has also funded children’s medical treatment, often quietly.

The family factor

Khan’s family life — his marriage to Gauri Khan and their children Aryan, Suhana and AbRam — is followed closely by fans. Aryan Khan directed a Netflix series in 2025, and Suhana Khan appears with her father in King (2026).
