Will MS Dhoni play IPL 2027? What we know after a season on the sidelines
A calf injury kept MS Dhoni out of the entire IPL 2026 season. He has said he will decide on IPL 2027 before December. Here is everything we know about his future with Chennai Super Kings.

For years, every IPL season has come with the same question: is this MS Dhoni’s last? In 2026 the question took an unexpected turn. Dhoni, now 45, did not play a single match of the season because of a calf injury. As the 2027 auction cycle approaches, fans of Chennai Super Kings are waiting for his decision.
A season that never started
In March 2026 CSK said Dhoni was recovering from a calf strain and would miss the first two weeks of the tournament. During his rehabilitation he aggravated the injury in a practice game. Coach Stephen Fleming later said that tearing the calf again would rule him out for the whole season — and in the end it did.
Dhoni stayed with the squad as a mentor and familiar presence in the dugout, but he did not take the field. It was the first IPL season since 2008 in which CSK played without him, apart from the two years the franchise was suspended.
The lap of honour
After CSK’s final home game of the season at Chepauk in May 2026, Dhoni walked a lap of the ground to thank the crowd, as he had done in previous years. The gesture fuelled speculation that he had played his last match at the stadium. Fleming, asked about another season, said the team was still working through it.
What Dhoni has said
In late October 2026, speaking at a healthcare event in Bengaluru, Dhoni said he would undergo medical tests and decide about IPL 2027 before December. That timing matters: teams must confirm their retained players ahead of the auction.
CSK’s chief executive, Kasi Viswanathan, has repeatedly said the decision belongs to Dhoni alone. Before the 2026 season he had insisted Dhoni would play — a reminder that, with Dhoni, plans are always subject to his body.
The rules that keep him in the game
Since 2025 the IPL has allowed former international players who have been retired for five years or more to be retained as “uncapped” players, at a lower price. Dhoni, who retired from internationals in August 2020, fits that category. It means CSK can keep him without using a large share of their budget.
What CSK need
On the field, CSK have moved towards a new generation led by Ruturaj Gaikwad. Off the field, Dhoni’s value is enormous: few players draw crowds and television audiences the way he does, in Chennai and at away grounds.
If he returns, the likely role is short: lower-order batting, wicketkeeping and guidance for younger players. Some former players have argued that if he can no longer keep wicket, he should not continue simply as a batter.
The record so far
Dhoni has captained CSK to five IPL titles (2010, 2011, 2018, 2021 and 2023), equal with Mumbai Indians for the most. He handed the captaincy to Gaikwad in 2024 but stepped in again during 2025 when Gaikwad was injured.
What happens next
There are three realistic outcomes:
- He returns for one more season, likely in a limited role, if medical tests are positive.
- He retires as a player and stays as a mentor, keeping his link with the franchise.
- He steps away completely, ending a 19-year IPL journey.
Whatever he chooses, Dhoni has always made such decisions quietly and on his own terms — his international retirement was announced in a short Instagram post. Fans should expect the same calm, understated style this time.
